Welcome!

My name is Lynn Urch, the owner of this website. I am a freelance translator from French and German into English, specialising in Finance and Economics.

I trained and worked as an accountant in the late 1980's, then after a BA (Hons) in French and German (UWE), I spent several years training (PGCE, Oxon) and working as a languages teacher in secondary schools and an adult education languages school. By this time, I was in my late thirties, which is commonly held to be the earliest a translator is ready to enter this profession. I graduated with Distinction from my MA in Translation Studies from the University of Hull in 2005 and soon after I joined the ITI and the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

I have been working as a freelance translator of French and German into English, my mother tongue, since 2005. Although I translate documents for general purposes, I am increasingly specialising in financial translation. Building on my background and experience in accountancy, I am presently digging deep into the specialism of German GAAP accounting as well as IFRS accounting, participating in online webcasts offered by the IASB and building up memory banks of aligned English, French and German financial terminology. In May 2011, I attended a 2-day course presented by Robin Bonthrone, the respected German-English Financial translator.

2009 was dominated by producing a new English translation of Heinrich von Stackelberg's "Marktform und Gleichgewicht" (Market Structure and Equilibrium) (1934), a seminal work in the field of Mathematical Economics. This was published in January 2011 and can be purchased from Springer's website. I am currently translating another book by the same author in between short-term commercial translation assignments.

Until recently, I lived in Dorset where I served as the Regional Coordinator of ITI Wessex for 5 fulfilling years. It was an excellent opportunity to network with other translators and interpreters locally as well as to participate in national conferences / committees and liaise with other language stakeholders. From a CPD training event I coordinated offering introductory training on Atril's DéjàVu translation memory software, a strong link was established between ITI Wessex and the University of Portsmouth, which runs a very successful MA in Translation Studies. ITI Wessex has since been able to help them with ideas for training events, part-time assessors and speakers. I was pleased to be invited back to speak to their MA students in April 2011 on the subject of Professional Standards in Translation.
